1 internet marketing

Geoff Livingston co-founded Zoetica to focus on cause-related work, and released an award-winning book on new media, Now is Gone, in 2007.

The end of the year brings the wrapping up of crucial fundraising drives for many organizations. Looking back at events, several exciting developments occurred in the non-profit social media space. Consider the rise of mobile as a valid giving platform, the great debate about slacktivism and widespread industry belief that social media is moving the needle, crowdsourcing social good hit unprecedented levels, and several new tools arrived that offer grassroots activism and online fundraising.

Moving forward, there are still many online challenges for the social good space. The coming year will see more developments as technologists, activists and online communicators work together to try to address issues such as cause fatigue, delivering return on investment and harnessing new and challenging media forms. Here are three social good trends to watch in 2011.

1. Social Middleware Will Make Causes More Fun

Cause fatigue hit an all time high in 2010, in large part because of over communication of vote-for-me contests, an unusually high amount of natural and manmade disasters, and poorly executed social media. More non-profits will turn to social middleware platforms like Crowdrise, Jumo, and a soon-to-emerge next generation Causes to reinvigorate their online efforts and create more fluid grassroots activism and fundraising.

These middleware solutions leverage people’s inherent networks in class='blippr-nobr'>Facebookclass="blippr-nobr">Facebook and class='blippr-nobr'>Twitterclass="blippr-nobr">Twitter and add new functionality to them so causes can better develop campaigns and platforms. New, layered functionality not only engages stakeholders in conversations, but it empowers individuals to create their own social good campaigns and initiatives as free agents. Expect non-profits and individuals who are suffering from cause fatigue and low return on investment from traditional social media tools to seek these more sophisticated answers.

The big question is which of these platforms will emerge as social good industry leaders. The race will be to see which platform can get the most causes and active users and may even feature competitive price wars on percentages taken from donations.

2. Causes Will Keep Tinkering With Mobile

Mobile became very interesting in 2010. Haiti fundraising was astounding. Smartphone applications were developed for canvassing and activism. Geosocial networks garnered enough subscribers to merit experimentation with projects that included homeless shelter checkins and museum mayorship battles.

At the same time, industry voices raised reasonable criticism about mobile as a valid platform for social good. These concerns range from return on investment with applications to questions about Foursquare’s long-term validity as a geosocial network. The critiques are reminiscent of the social media adoption curve in 2007.

The reality of mobile class='blippr-nobr'>Internetclass="blippr-nobr">Internet usage shows only an increased year-over-year use by citizens with more affordable and powerful smartphones. This creates an inescapable media platform for non-profits. Look for more experimentation and adoption, and with it the emergence of mobile social good best practices.

3. Improved Corporate Social Good

Thanks to social media, the number of campaigns that joined brands with causes to donate a portion of proceeds hit a new high in 2010. At the same time, companies and their non-profit affiliates started to receive push back from online citizens about the value of such efforts, whether their social good efforts had any significant impact and how they related to the brand.

As the social web brought new levels of authenticity to general intra-company and personal communications, this new level of online accountability will require a more authentic corporate social responsibility. Look for more core value ties between cause marketing efforts and actual causes in 2011.

Show me a modern political candidate who doesn’t understand television, and I’ll show you a loser.

When TV became the dominant medium for Americans to consume news and entertainment, political candidates could no longer be successful without looking polished in televised debates, appearing on talk shows and spending big on commercials.

Like the television boom of the 1960s, we are standing on the precipice of a big shift in how public figures are perceived and how campaigns are conducted. Our frontier is social media, and its impact on mainstream political culture is coming on fast.

While my colleagues have been making their predictions about what’s on the tech and social media horizon in 2011, there will be no major U.S. elections next year. Here, we’ll be postulating about social media’s impact on the more long-term future of American civics.

1. There Will Be a Tipping Point

While campaigning and marketing share many similarities, the differences mean everything when you’re talking about democracy’s big picture. Brands can sell by hitting a tech savvy demographic of influencers. Elections involve everyone, whether they’re online or not.

If a large bloc of your constituency is made up of 65+ year-old retirees, chances are a Facebookclass="blippr-nobr">Facebook strategy won’t be time well spent. Despite the enthusiasm of the tech crowd and blogosphere, Twitterclass="blippr-nobr">Twitter is exceedingly far from the mainstream, with only 6% of Americans using the service. And while the world consumes YouTubeclass="blippr-nobr">YouTube videos at a mind-bending rate, viral success is still transient and elusive.

While these tools have certainly proven to be effective in rallying support and contributions, we don’t yet live in a world where social media can make or break a political candidate by itself.

That will change, perhaps even by the next major election cycle.

The future of the social media politician is not about wild speculation and technological uncertainties. It has everything to do with when and how deeply social media can be absorbed into mainstream culture. We are on track for a tipping point — a JFK/Nixon TV debate moment — when everyone on the political scene will acknowledge that we can never go back to campaigns without social.

2. New Media Strategists Will Just Be Strategists

I’ve had the opportunity to talk with the new media strategists for a number of senators, congresspeople and political causes. Despite their differences, they all agree that their own jobs will soon be folded into the larger campaign strategy. As many have already foreseen, social media will not require experts for much longer. As we head toward true mainstream adoption, social will be a default and well-understood tool in the belt of any public-facing professional.

We’ve already seen this happening in the private sector with marketing and PR professionals. As many corporate entities lumber to catch up with those on the cutting edge, so too will government officials and the campaigners who seek their offices.

3. We’ll See the Devaluation of Old Media in Politics/>

Print and radio ads are not as valuable as TV. TV will no longer be as valuable as interactive media. For politics, this is especially so, as the arena (at its best, anyway) warrants engagement and discussion.

As media appetites shift, this is an inevitability. In the U.S., we’re already seeing web use catch up with television in terms of weekly hours spent. Political money will simply go where the eyeballs are, and we’re likely to see a big payoff on social creativity when it comes to future campaigns.

4. Whistle Blowing Gets More Efficient, But That’s It

The WikiLeaksclass="blippr-nobr">Wikileaks saga has ignited plenty of discussion about journalism and whistle blowing in the Internet age. But at the end of the day, the mechanics of an information leak are about the same as they’ve always been: Someone from within an organization leaks damaging information, and the media (in whatever form) disseminates it to the public. Generally speaking, WikiLeaks has only acted as a “middle man” for raw information. It’s journalists who are making sense of it and transmitting it to the public with context.

The web only speeds up this process through digitization and universal access. Governments and politicians will feel the impact of leaks sooner, but it’s unlikely the methods of protecting sensitive information will be much changed.

Your Thoughts?

What do you think will be social media’s biggest impact on the political process? How long until we see a winning campaign strategy that is purely social? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Unity Stoakes is the co-founder and president of OrganizedWisdom, an expert-driven digital media company focused on health and wellness. OrganizedWisdom is building the world’s first digital mapping of online health experts to help people easily discover and connect with credible health resources.

Is your doctor easily accessible online, or does he or she believe that the class='blippr-nobr'>Internetclass="blippr-nobr">Internet isn’t a resource for accessing health information?

If it’s the latter, it may be time to find another doctor. With nearly 90% of online Americans searching the Internet for health resources, it’s likely you and your friends and family already use the Internet to research health issues. It’s true that the web has a jumble of health information, and engaging online takes time, which most health experts don’t have. The good news, however, is that the increasing number of health professionals now embracing the Internet as an important and useful tool for health and wellness is beginning to change your options as a consumer.

Read on for some ways that social media can help doctors, health experts and everyday users.

Social Wellness Trends/>

An exciting new social media trend is emerging that disrupts the standard view of health care delivery and will have a profound impact on us all. Thousands of doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, and health advocates are publicly engaging with people online. In fact, nearly 40% of Americans turn to social media for health information.

Patients (and a few early adopter health pros) moved online years ago to share health guidance, give support and find answers. But until recently, many health professionals have avoided using the Internet and social media as a way to help patients. This reluctance is changing, as savvy physicians, nurses, dentists and other health pros are realizing that if their patients are online, then perhaps they should be too. Health practitioners who were once too busy, inexperienced or afraid to share their expertise online, now actively share links on Twitterclass="blippr-nobr">Twitter and Facebookclass="blippr-nobr">Facebook, blog, write for online medical journals, engage on Q&A sites, or contribute to online health sites and forums.

For too long, health and wellness has been a do-it-yourself proposition for patients online, and people have been left on their own to determine how to effectively utilize empty search boxes. People have great access to lots of information, but they must sort through the billions of articles to determine the credible from redundant health encyclopedias, marketing web sites or sites with potentially unknown sources. Then, the task of deciding the credibility of the sources and articles has fallen on the patient alone.

While the number of health experts interacting with patients online is relatively small, there is a clear trend taking shape. A recent Manhattan Research survey of U.S. physicians shows an increase of Internet usage for professional purposes up from 2.5 hours per week in 2002 to 8 hours per week in 2010. More strikingly, while more than 100,000 doctors are using closed social health networks like Sermo.com and publishing in peer-reviewed journals online, thousands of health professionals are now blogging, using Twitter, and connecting with patients on Facebook in very public ways. So much so that this November, for the first time, the American Medical Association released a set of guidelines to direct physicians communicating and engaging with patients via social media. And earlier this year, the CDC also published its own best practices toolkit for how health professionals should be using social media.

Given that so many people now go to the Internet before, during and after their visit to the doctor’s office, the lack of guidance from credible and trusted health experts online is a growing problem. In fact, Manhattan Research shows that 61% of people now use the Internet instead of visiting a doctor. Thankfully, the tide is turning as thousands of health practitioners move online to do much more than interact with friends, family and colleagues and are instead using the social web to dispense their particular health expertise.

What This Means for Health Information Seekers/>

We are standing at the precipice of a new online revolution in health care. As more and more health experts embrace the Internet and increase their social media activity, health information seekers will undoubtedly benefit in profound ways. Based on conversations and surveys conducted with experts and health information seekers, here are some of the benefits associated with a robust online community of active health experts:

Interaction With Experts: In the real world, people seeking answers to important health, financial or legal matters look for guidance from the best experts. With a growing community of health experts participating in online discussions, people have access to more expertise than ever before at their fingertips.

Credibility and Trust: With doctors and other health professionals contributing information online in increasing numbers, it is important for a trust filter to separate credible information and sources from information that is not credible. The community of health professionals that is forming online will act as a system of checks and balances to separate good information and sources from the bad.

Transparency: It’s been a watershed year for increased transparency as government, big business, the financial services industry and other sectors have been shining a light into their operations like never before. Healthcare is taking a major step forward in this regard at the grassroots level, with an expert community being formed online by doctors, nurses and other health professionals across the country. As more doctors view social media as an extension of their professional reputation, you can be sure that they will treat their online interactions with the same care as they do in the offline world.

While the increase in the online activity of health experts is a welcome development, searching for crucial health information online remains an overwhelming and intimidating process for many. In the offline world, people searching for health information seek out the best experts — and now with more health professionals moving online, people will finally be able to connect with credible experts they can trust.

Making Money Through

Ok Go Explains There Are Lots Of Ways To Make Money If You Can Get Fans

from the everything's-possible dept

Over the last few years, we've covered many of the moves by the band Ok Go -- to build up a fanbase often with the help of amazingly viral videos, ditch their major record label (EMI), and explore new business model opportunities. In the last few days, two different members of Ok Go explained a bit more of the band's thinking in two separate places, and both are worth reading. First up, we have Tim Nordwind, who did an interview with Hypebot, where he explained the band's general view on file sharing:

Obviously we'd love for anyone who has our music to buy a copy. But again, we're realistic enough to know that most music can be found online for free. And trying to block people's access to it isn't good for bands or music. If music is going to be free, then musicians will simply have to find alternative methods to make a living in the music business. People are spending money on music, but it's on the technology to play it. They spend hundreds of dollars on Ipods, but then fill it with 80 gigs of free music. That's ok, but it's just a different world now, and bands must learn to adjust.

Elsewhere in the interview, he talks about the importance of making fans happy and how the band realizes that there are lots of different ways to make money, rather than just selling music directly:

Our videos have opened up many more opportunities for us to make the things we want to make, and to chase our best and wildest ideas. Yes, we need to figure out how to make a living in a world where people don't buy music anymore. But really, we've been doing that for the last ten years. Things like licensing, touring, merch, and also now making videos through corporate sponsorship have all allowed us to keep the lights on and continue making music.

Separately, last Friday, Damian Kulash wrote a nice writeup in the Wall Street Journal all about how bands can, should and will make money going forward. In many ways the piece reminds me a bit of my future of music business models post from earlier this year -- and Kulash even uses many of the same examples in his article (Corey Smith, Amanda Palmer, Josh Freese, etc.). It's a really worthwhile read as well. He starts by pointing out that for a little over half a century, the record labels had the world convinced that the "music" industry really was just the "recorded music" industry:

For a decade, analysts have been hyperventilating about the demise of the music industry. But music isn't going away. We're just moving out of the brief period--a flash in history's pan--when an artist could expect to make a living selling records alone. Music is as old as humanity itself, and just as difficult to define. It's an ephemeral, temporal and subjective experience.

For several decades, though, from about World War II until sometime in the last 10 years, the recording industry managed to successfully and profitably pin it down to a stable, if circular, definition: Music was recordings of music. Records not only made it possible for musicians to connect with listeners anywhere, at any time, but offered a discrete package for commoditization. It was the perfect bottling of lightning: A powerful experience could be packaged in plastic and then bought and sold like any other commercial product.

But, he notes, that time is now gone, thanks in large part to the internet. But that doesn't mean the music business is in trouble. Just the business of selling recorded music. But there's lots of things musicians can sell. He highlights Corey Smith and Smith's ability to make millions by giving away his music for free, and then touring. But he also points out that touring isn't for everyone. He covers how corporate licensing has become a bigger and bigger opportunity for bands that are getting popular. While he doesn't highlight the specific economics of it, what he's really talking about is that if your band is big, you can sell your fan's attention -- which is something Ok Go has done successfully by getting corporate sponsorship of their videos. As he notes, the sponsors provide more money than the record labels with many fewer strings:

These days, money coming from a record label often comes with more embedded creative restrictions than the marketing dollars of other industries. A record label typically measures success in number of records sold. Outside sponsors, by contrast, tend to take a broader view of success. The measuring stick could be mentions in the press, traffic to a website, email addresses collected or views of online videos. Artists have meaningful, direct, and emotional access to our fans, and at a time when capturing the public's attention is increasingly difficult for the army of competing marketers, that access is a big asset.

...

Now when we need funding for a large project, we look for a sponsor. A couple weeks ago, my band held an eight-mile musical street parade through Los Angeles, courtesy of Range Rover. They brought no cars, signage or branding; they just asked that we credit them in the documentation of it. A few weeks earlier, we released a music video made in partnership with Samsung, and in February, one was underwritten by State Farm.

We had complete creative control in the productions. At the end of each clip we thanked the company involved, and genuinely, because we truly are thankful. We got the money we needed to make what we want, our fans enjoyed our videos for free, and our corporate Medicis got what their marketing departments were after: millions of eyes and goodwill from our fans. While most bands struggle to wrestle modest video budgets from labels that see videos as loss leaders, ours wind up making us a profit.

Of course, that only works if you have a big enough fanbase, but that doesn't mean there aren't things that less well known bands can use to make money as well. He talks about an up-and-coming band in LA that doesn't even have a manager that was able make money:

The unsigned and unmanaged Los Angeles band Killola toured last summer and offered deluxe USB packages that included full albums, live recordings and access to two future private online concerts for $40 per piece. Killola grossed $18,000 and wound up in the black for their tour. Mr. Donnelly says, "I can't imagine they'll be ordering their yacht anytime soon, but traditionally bands at that point in their careers aren't even breaking even on tour."

The point, Kulash, notes, is that there's a lot of things a band can sell, focusing on "selling themselves." And, the thing he doesn't mention is that, when you're focusing on selling the overall experience that is "you" as a musician or a band, it's something that can't be freely copied. People can copy the music all they want, but they can't copy you. "You" are a scarce good that can't be "pirated." That's exactly what more and more musicians are figuring out these days, and it's helping to make many more artists profitable. And, no, it doesn't mean that any artist can make money. But it certainly looks like any artist that understands this can do a hell of a lot better than they would have otherwise, if they just relied on the old way of making money in the music business.

Even in times of severe budgetary crisis, WMATA still has to advertise itself. And what better way to reverse the public's negative opinion about random bag searches, constant maintenance, annoying talking buses, broken escalators, confusing fare structures and so forth than with some state of the art "guerrilla" marketing! Kytja Weir reports that the agency is going to try and get your attention the same way your local emo band does.

The transit system brought on Williams Whittle, based in Alexandria, earlier this month to help market the agency using traditional advertising but also possibly "guerrilla marketing" and "street teams," said Metro spokesman Reggie Woodruff.

"Williams Whittle will assist us as we continue to explore ways to increase revenue and off-peak ridership and to more effectively promote Metro and the improvements that we are making," he wrote in an e-mail.

That could mean "unconventional marketing" that directly engages potential riders, he explained. He could not provide any examples of what such direct marketing might look like, though.

What, was Evan Hensleigh not available? WMATA will be using about two-thirds of its $1.8 million advertising budget on Williams Whittle's services. For the sake of public transportation, I sure hope that Williams Whittle has some better "unconventional" ideas than those Second Life animations which Metro rolls out every now and then -- based on the company's website, it looks like they've got a ton of experience creating slightly annoying, yet oft-imitated television ads.

foreclosure statistics

It is hard to not laugh out loud at the amazing stupidity of those who say "It's Different Here".

Please consider 'Low-doc' home borrowers hit by rising rates

A new report shows a sharp increase in the number of 'low-doc' borrowers struggling to keep up with their mortgage repayments as interest rates rise.

Adjusted for loans that passed from being in arrears to being settled because the property was sold, the percentage of prime loans more than 90 days in arrears increased from 1.33 per cent in the June quarter to 1.37 per cent in the three months to the end of September.

However, Fitch says self-employed borrowers have been hit hard, which has pushed arrears among prime low documentation loans to a record 3.97 per cent - slightly higher than the previous peak of mortgage delinquencies in this segment reached during the peak of the financial crisis in the December quarter of 2008.

The associate director in Fitch's structured finance team James Zanesi says higher mortgage repayments appear to be hitting the self-employed sector much harder than employees.

"The three consecutive cash rate hikes ending in May 2010 modestly affected Australian prime mortgage performance in the third quarter of 2010. Households have demonstrated some stability in spite of the higher mortgage payments," he said.

The very worst performance in the September quarter continued to be amongst the closest equivalent Australia has to subprime loans - 'low-doc, non-conforming' borrowers.

The arrears rate amongst this group was 18.94 per cent, although it makes up a relatively tiny proportion of Australian mortgages.
Progression of Rot

Australia is starting to get hit hard but the important word in this sentence is starting. Rot starts at the edges and the outside periphery (subprime and low-doc), then spreads to the core.

The party is now over as I mentioned in Partied Out: A Recap of Australia's Now Imploding Housing Bubble; Property Bull Offers Jeremy Grantham $100m Housing bet, Party is Not Over

US Graphs, Statistics

Here is a nice set of US stats and graphs from the LPS Mortgage Monitor: October 2010 “Dashboard” that depicts where Australia will eventually head.

Total Delinquencies

Delinquencies remain about 2.7 times historical average, foreclosure inventories are 7.4 times and rising.

October Month-End Data: Conclusions

  • Foreclosure inventories continue to grow, the rise in delinquencies remains subdued as a result.
  • Accelerated foreclosure activity has led to a rapid decline in agency delinquencies. Foreclosure inventories have risen dramatically as a result.
  • Most western states have experienced a decline in the total 30 day and foreclosure inventory over the last six months.
  • The issue of current loans going delinquent remains, however more and more sixty day defaults are repeats.
  • Modification dominated seriously delinquent cures have declined over the last several months but still remain elevated.
  • More six and 12 month delinquent loans are moving to foreclosure, but the extremely delinquent category continues to grow.
  • Foreclosure sales dropped sharply, down 35 percent nationwide. Impact was across all investor categories.
  • Origination activity continues to accelerate with the government percentage declining. High quality lending is yielding the best vintage performance in years.

The housing rot in OZ has just started and it's a long way to the core. But it will get there. Australia can look forward to similar stats in years to come.

In his book, Thompson's search for the American dream ends at the burned-out husk of a former nightclub, a fitting metaphor for a city that went from the fastest-growing to the most-foreclosed city in America in the space of a year. As our article and its accompanying video document, today more than 80% of Vegas mortgages are underwater, and empty or abandoned home pepper the city.

Sunshine and Stricken Suburbs

Vegas is hardly the only region whose housing sector fed on dreams. In Florida, the third-most foreclosed state, dreams have fed the area's growth ever since Ponce de Leon ventured there in search of the fountain of youth. Our piece from Florida explores a different kind of dream: an uncompleted "Italian resort themed" suburban neighborhood that's now filled with cows. In order to save on taxes in the now-unprofitable real estate venture, the area's developer had the area reclassified as farmland and moved in livestock. As for the people who live there, the swanky neighborhood they signed on for is now a barbed-wire bonanza.

And dreams continue to be deferred across the country. In Modesto, Calif., Todd Lappin documents empty streets, hastily boarded-up windows and stagnant swimming pools in the fourth most foreclosed state. With his images of rusting barbecues, overgrown yards and abandoned homes, Lappin sketches a near-apocalyptic landscape, the scattered leavings of a once-posh suburban development.

Meanwhile, a promising development in Vickery, Ga., has started transforming into a money pit. To the dismay of the area's residents, the bankruptcy of Vickery's developer and rising foreclosures have sent neighborhood fees through the roof, even as property values have tumbled. As the author notes, it's unclear if the bucolic neighborhood will ever recoup its lost property values.

Small-Town Destitution

One doesn't have to travel to a sun-kissed wonderland to find a dream that came crashing down. As David Schepp documents in "The Housing Mess Hits One New York Town Hard," Mount Vernon, a scruffy suburb of New York City has also watched its property values plummet. With a majority African-American and Hispanic populace, the working-class city was heavy targeted by subprime lenders, a factor that helps explain why prices have fallen by 37% across the city and by as much as 72% in some neighborhoods.

Making Easy Money

Not much happened in the market today as volume was lighter than the audience for a Hasselhoff reality TV show (and also about 900 IQ points higher) as investors continue to sit on their laurels (and if it is this Laurel on which they are sitting, then Money McBags certainly understands) while
waiting for year end.  Fund managers who have spent the last nearly 11.5
months hugging their index as tightly as if it were a jittery Serinda Swan
have no interest in deviating from that non-alpha (yet high bonus)
generating strategy in the last 3 weeks of the year.  It's just not
going to happen, like Mark Madoff playing Santa Claus in next year's
Macy's Day parade (and not because he's Jewish, but because he's dead).

Fund managers are content to glide in to year end and not do anything
to fuck up their easy earned bonuses (because really, mimicking an
index takes less skill and time than it takes for Smurfette to get a
date on a Friday night) while working class America prepares to eat cake
(and not regular cake, but urinal cake).  So "Santa Claus Rally" on as
the next three weeks should be less volatile than Wesley Snipes' acting
career over the next 3 to 5 years (and less volatile than his actual tax payments for the last 10 years as well).

As for US macro news, there was no real new information today other than that Wall Street is set to wrap up a jizztacular two year run thanks to Uncle Sam, higher stock and bond trading, and something called outright fraud.  Despite warnings from the always lovely Meredith Whitney that Wall Street is going to contract in the next several years (and Money McBags has such a crush on her that he would both wrassle any other suitor
for her and let her manipulate his balance sheet assets), bankers are
making out like bandits this year (and yes, that is an insult to the
good name of bandits everywhere).  Apparently being able to lend money
while not having to deal with the risk of losses is a fruitful business.

In legislative news, a key part of the Obama health care bill was deemed unconstitutional
today because the Founding Fathers definitely were in favor of letting
people forgo health insurance so they could spread the costs of their
emergency room visits to those paying for insurance, well they were in
favor of that and fucking their slaves.  Also, the tax package compromise (and Money McBags would compromise and let Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack, or her lovely staffer Jennifer Baird
tax his package anytime they like) passed a procedural vote today with
the compromise being that no one will have to pay taxes.

The new tax bill will continue George W. Bush's spend and don't tax
policies that were so popular with Republicans for eight years which
means that Obama's approval rating should soon shoot to a billionty
(that is if Obama were American).  The key thing to remember about this
bill, which will cause the US deficit to spiral even more out of control
than Lindsay Lohan
at an all you can snort party, is that by the time the rhetoric hits
the fan, most of us will be dead so fuck you next generation with your
loud music, your texting, and your general douchebaggery.  Perhaps if you wouldn't have been such a bunch of assclowns, the government might have given a shit about your future.  Consider yourselves pwned.

There was one bit of macro news out and that was that nearly one in every four houses
with a mortgage was underwater last month yielding a total negative
equity value of $744B, or whats better known as, "CitiGroup."  While
this number is slightly down from last month, though not as
cocktickingly down as the future volume on TV commercials
(and Money McBags thanks the great FCC in the sky for this because
there is nothing worse than falling asleep to the melodic stylings of
Charlie Rose (that is the point of his show, right?) only to be
violently woken up by a guy loudly exclaiming you will love his nuts),
it was driven by foreclosures going up and not by a rise in home
values.  So the news is about as positive as being born to a successful
Ivy League professor (on one hand, you get free tuition at a great
school and good benefits, on the other hand, you really have to work for it).
Interestingly, 67% of all homes with mortgages in Nevada are now
underwater which means mythologists are only 33% away from finally
locating Atlantis.

Internationally, China caused a bit of a rally today by refusing to raise rates
even with inflation accelerating at its fastest pace in two years as
investors hope China's bubble can stay inflated until the global
depression ends.  Also in Asia, Japan is cutting their corporate tax rate by 5% to 35%, though it is unclear how they will make up the $18B shortfall this creates other than selling tickets for Harumi Nemoto motorboat rides.

In the market, all of the news centered around M&A as DELL made a compelling
offer to buy Compellent for $950MM and an upgraded call center number
for Compellent to use when their shitty DELL laptops break down.  Also, GE is buying Windstream for 800 Pounds (or what is more commonly known as, one Gabourey Sidibe)

Finally, Goldman added AAPL to their conviction buy list and put a $430 price on it while also finally adding Brooklyn Decker
to their "really hot" list, Leo Tolstoy to their great Russian writers
list, and Rutherford B. Hayes to their most famous guys named Rutherford
list.  GOOG also received an analyst upgrade today, this time from
Wedbush Morgan (and Money McBags would love to wed this Morgan's
bush) who increased their target price on GOOG from $575 to $750 based
on the fact that the analyst hadn't published anything in a while and
wanted more funds to trade through his firm (that's how the sell side
rolls).  There is not a $175 difference between how GOOG was perceived
yesterday and today, but sell side analysts need to eat too.  Finally, A&P filed for bankruptcy because levering up to buy other low margin competitors proved to be a worse strategic decision than one of Sal Alosi's.

Editors Note: Kind readers, you all noticed that Money McBags
was away for the past two weeks and many of you inquired as to his
whereabouts.  Let it be known that rumors of his demise were more
overblown than Peter North in Face Jam.
Money McBags was simply called away to take care of very important
business (which may or may not have included a stint as a judge for this tremendous competition)
but he is back for now and that is what matters.  While this first
column back is a bit rusty, Money McBags assures you all he will quickly
find his stride or his name isn't Money McBags.

Winter is just around the corner, and that means colder temperatures will cause your heating costs to rise inevitably. The average family in Ontario spends about 65 percent of all utility bills on heating, with this figure being highest during the winter. Here are a few simple things you can do to your home in order to save money on heating costs this winter:

1) Open up the vents.

As the passageways where heat is circulated in your home, it's important to keep these as clean as possible. Removing any dust will not only improve your home's air quality, but it will also maximize the amount of heat that will circulate in your home.

2) Get your furnace serviced.

Arrange to have your furnace checked out and audited by your local gas company. This can save you up to 10% in heating costs this winter.

3) Prep your windows for winter.

Did you know that the majority of heating is lost through the windows, doors, and cracks of your home? Prevent this from happening by filling in any cracks and lining unused windows and doors with insulation tape. You can also get extra insulation for your windows by investing in some energy efficient window treatments. Many companies now make shades with Energy Shield, which utilizes natural light to conserve the heat in your home. These shades also have special fabric pockets which help to insulate heat.

4) Turn those ceiling fans on.

It sounds unlikely but by having ceiling fans turn upwards, it can help circulate heat flow in a room.

5) Turn down the thermostat during work hours.

Most thermostats have timers. Set yours to a lower temperature when there's nobody at home, and have it automatically start an hour before you come home from work. That way, you're still coming home to a warm home and conserving energy when it's not needed.

Incorporating these simple and easy steps can save you a significant amount on your next heating bill. Not only are you cutting down on expenses, but the environment will thank you for it too for making energy-conscious choices. Follow these tips for a greener, warmer winter season!
