Information On How To Get Whiter Teeth

We took our oldest daughter to her first dentist appointment right after she turned four years old. Most pediatricians recommend a first checkup and cleaning at the age of three, and some doctors are recommending first visits even younger than that. We didn't really mean to wait until she was four; but a new baby, and a new job that didn't include dental insurance made it easy to delay that first visit.

I was so proud of my daughter when she had her exam. She was compliant and interested in the process. I wasn't so excited, however, when we received the results: she had seven cavities and it appeared as though three of them were bad enough to need silver caps.

For those of you who have yet to experience a disappointing first dentist visit, here are some things I've learned about children, teeth, and pediatric dentistry since then.

Using a bottle at night causes a condition called "bottle mouth." Usually the front teeth are discolored or decaying with this condition. Clean your child's (yes, even your baby's) teeth before bed at night. Breast milk alone will not cause bottle mouth, but breast milk combined with other sugars left on the teeth will lead to that condition.

Flossing is important. I knew that flossing was important for us as adults; but I was unaware that the American Dental Association recommends flossing your children's teeth as soon as they have two teeth close enough to touch. And that was the problem with my daughter's teeth: most of her cavities were between her molars where brushing was not going to help.

Fluoride really helps. You can begin using fluoridated toothpaste as soon as your child learns to spit after brushing. We made this into a fun bathtub game to practice taking a small drink, and spitting it out without swallowing. The incentive to learn this new skill was the promise of pink, bubble-gum-flavored toothpaste with a picture of Disney princesses on the bottle. Most tap water is fluoridated now, but if you and your family drink mostly bottled water, you may want to ask your dentist about other sources of fluoride.

Genes count. If you or your spouse have a history of cavities and other teeth problems, chances are really good that your child will, too. Of course, if you have a sweet tooth, the chances are high that your child has inherited that tendency, and excessive sweets do lead to tooth decay, as well. Other indicators of teeth problems might be thin enamel or teeth that grow really close together.

And while I was still reeling from shame that I had neglected or even somehow caused my daughter's tooth decay; and while I was still stunned by the sticker shock of fixing the problem teeth, the dentist brought out another piece of paper for me to sign.

This paper listed a number of "behavior management" techniques that I was allowing the dentist and his assistants to use on my child. And I was informed that neither my husband nor I would be allowed in the treatment room. The idea that someone else would be able to hold their hand over my child's mouth to stop her screaming; or that she might be forcibly restrained by Velcro ties; or that she might be strapped to a board to immobilize her, all without the presence of her parents went completely against our parenting philosophies.

Since then, I have learned that many pediatric dentists do not allow parents in the treatment room. They cite such reasons as the child may look to the parent to rescue him; that the child is more compliant without the presence of the parent; and that crying and screaming bothers the parent worse than the dentist, who is presumably used to it.

We found those reasons unacceptable. A parent should be working in conjunction with the medical or dental professional to gain cooperation from the child. And if any restraining needs to be done, I would want her dad or I to be the one involved, not a stranger.

So it is very important to ask questions of any prospective dentist, including the policy on allowing parents in the treatment room. Don't ever think just one pediatric dentist is the only choice, no matter how highly your play group moms have recommended this one. I called every pediatric dentist in the phone book, until I found one who actually encouraged parents to cooperate in their child's dental care in the treatment room.

That didn't make it easy, though. We had a total of five appointments. One was for X-rays and cleaning. Three were for pulpectomies and caps. If you are unfamiliar with these terms, that's a good thing.

A pulpectomy is a root canal for baby teeth. It is less extensive than a root canal for adults, but because children's teeth are so small, in a lot of cavities, the nerve must be deadened before they can fill it. And because children are prone to grinding their teeth, and the small size of children's teeth make it difficult for large fillings to remain in place, a silver cap is placed over the tooth. This cap, unlike a crown in an adult's tooth, does not need to be specially fitted. The cap will only be used for a few years until the tooth falls out.

Our last appointment was for one filling. But because of the memory of her previous appointments, this last one was the most difficult in gaining cooperation. Even nitrous oxide doesn't ensure complete relaxation. So if your dentist offers to do all the work at once under general anesthesia, my advice is to consider it. We didn't take that opportunity because it would have cost us quite a bit more. But you also don't want a child who dreads or actively hates going to the dentist. Regular dental visits will be a part of a good health regimen his whole life.

As of this publishing, the stock is continuing to climb today (7/23/12) climbing to just under $.15 per share. The beauty of this company is that it has fundamentals; a good team, good product mix and revenue!

The Iowa appliance rebate program received $2,881,000 in federal funding. It offers rebates now on a host of items that meet Energy Star qualifications. What happens to the still-functioning appliances that are now outmoded?

Iowa Appliance Rebate Details

The U.S. Department of Energy advises that consumers may submit an Iowa appliance rebate application for the replacement of a refrigerator, clothes washer, dishwasher, propane furnace, gas boiler, central air conditioner, and air source heat pump, gas tank-less water heater or a few other appliances.

Consumers wishing to receive a State of Iowa appliance rebate must ensure that they purchase a qualifying replacement appliance and certify that they properly disposed of the item they replaced. There are no checks or balances in place to ensure that this truly takes place as the Iowa energy rebates program accepts a self-certification.

Economic Aspects of Appliance Rebates

Benzinga suggests that the Iowa appliance rebate program is a cash bonanza for appliance dealers. Since the Iowa appliance rebate application specifies that only Iowa retailer purchases qualify, the news appears to be good on the economic front.

On the flipside are the recent lessons learned from the Cash for Clunkers program that led to the sale of approximately 690,000 cars. Edmunds reports that of these vehicle sales, only 125,000 could be traced back directly to the program. The other sales were considered to have been planned already.

What about the Environmental Impact?

While the Cash for Clunkers program required the car dealers to properly dispose of the trade-in vehicles, the Iowa appliance rebate program - and many others like it - leaves this step to consumers. It also raises the question of outmoding an appliance well in advance of its useful life's end.

For example, 2008 floods in Cedar Rapids led to emergency pickups of about 2,568 tons of appliances that might have otherwise ended up in landfills. Will homeowners in these areas now scrap their new appliances in favor of the latest models? With no companies providing emergency appliance recycling in Iowa cities now, will Craigslist see an influx of ads or will landfills find an influx of otherwise working refrigerators?

As long ago as 1999, Grist Magazine posed the question of what to do with aging appliances. Citing the example of coffee makers, the magazine outlined that in 1995, the production of coffee makers required, "21 million pounds of polypropylene, 8 million pounds of glass, 4 million pounds of aluminum, and 600,000 pounds of copper."

Considered the quintessential throw-away small appliance, the amount of waste generated by these coffee makers - during manufacture and after consumer use -- is considerable. With the Iowa appliance rebate program covering a host of appliances, it is somewhat worrisome what will happen to items deemed throw-away.

It also begs the question if the environmental savings are not eclipsed by the damage done during the increase in manufacture of the new appliances in anticipation of nationwide rebate programs.

The biggest search engine of them all is without a doubt Google. What they say goes, and most website owners just have to put up with it. It is always good to know what SEO techniques that Google will allow, but most of all, what they will not allow. They can blacklist your site for as long as they want, and you will never be able to get a high ranking again if you cross them once.

Knowing how important a great ranking is for your web site or blog site, here is a list of six SEO techniques you SHOULD NOT do for any reason:

1. YOUR WEB PAGE TEXT IS IN GRAPHICS FORM ONLY
Google considers "burying" text in your HTML code hides the text from their spiders that are trying to detect all of your relevant content. They feel this is manipulating their search engines and they don't like that one bit.

2. YOUR SITE HAS A BLACKLISTED WEB PAGE LINKED TO IT
A good rule of thumb regarding this issue is never to link to a "link farm" or a "Free for ALL" link page. These websites deal in every under-handed cheap trick they can find to bypass Google's strict submission rules, thereby bringing every other website linked to them down in the gutter. Make sure that all of your links lead Google and your site visitors to reputable pages at all times.

3. BAD LANGUAGE ON YOUR MAIN PAGES
This also includes using ethnic slurs of all types, as Google really looks down on racist sites that result in hate crimes or other controversial events.

4. LINK BUYING
Google really hates when you have to pay another site just to link with yours. If your site is worthy of being included in Google's main pages, why on earth would you have to buy a link? It does not make much sense from a business standpoint either, because you should put your promotion budget somewhere else entirely.

5. CLOAKING
When you present one web page to your readers and another page just for the spiders from Google to search for relevant keywords, this is known as "cloaking". If an SEO specialist says it's OK to do it his way, tell him firmly "No way!" and go with another SEO company that is more reputable.

6. YOUR SERVER IS DOWN DURING A GOOGLE SEARCH
You say that this is not your fault, but in a way it is. You cannot afford any down time as far as your main web pages are concerned, because that eats into your profits on a weekly basis if it happens too much. So always find the best server possible for your site, no matter the cost. And when Google sends out their spiders to your main pages for ranking purposes it is a HUGE error if your server is down and Google comes back with an error message. Big problem time!

7. ZERO LINKS Your website must have a least one back link coming in from a reputable website for Google to recognize you as worth their time. So before you submit your web pages, make sure you link to somebody first.

8. KEYWORD STUFFING
I went over this is another recent article, but it is a very important technique to remember to avoid. If Google thinks your pages are filled with certain keywords that you have included over 10% in the content's overall body, you will be heavily penalized by Google for keyword stuffing that will be hard for your site to recover from.

9. COPYRIGHT VIOLATION
